In Paintsville & Johnson County you'll find a wide variety of attractions and entertainment. Historic Downtown Paintsville offers antiquing, unique local restaurants and a Historic Walking Tour. You can golf at the Historic Paintsville Golf course where you can challenge your skills by driving the ball across the river and your cart across a swinging bridge! In the Van Lear area you'll find the 'Butcher Holler' home of Loretta Lynn and the Van Lear Coal Miners' Museum. In the Staffordsville area you can step back in time at the Mountain Home Place, an 1850's Appalachian farm located at beautiful Paintsville Lake State Park. The River area is home to the grave of famous pioneer Jenny Wiley, and the Forest and Maxine Preston Memorial Pedestrian Bridge. Constructed from composite plastic fibers and 420 foot in length, the bridge offers a safe, yet unique walking experience you will not find anywhere else in the world...Just ask the folks at Guinness Book of World Records, they listed it as the world's longest plastic-deck suspended foot bridge! The Hagerhill area will be home to the trail head of the soon to open Dawkins Line Trail, a KY Rails to Trails Conservancy. The rail-trail will accommodate hikers, horseback riders and cyclists and will be KY's longest rail-trail. Located in the Oil Springs area is 'OSCAR' the Oil Springs Cultural Arts and Recreation Center. OSCAR once served as both a high school and elementary school but is now a regional arts educational center. Classes include, spinning, weaving, quilting, pottery, woodcarving, painting heritage art, recycled art, dance, music and drama. The US 23 Country Music Highway Museum is located directly off US 23 in Johnson County and showcases the role Appalachian mountain people have played in shaping the history of Country Music. Stars such as Loretta Lynn, Patty Loveless, Billy Ray Cyrus, The Judds and Rebecca Lynn Howard are all from this famous stretch of US 23.
