History of the Civic Affairs Commission
For the past three decades, Stafford’s Community and Civic Affairs Commission (once known as Civic Pride) has been organizing many of the annual family events that have become part of our holiday traditions.
Independence Day wouldn’t be the same without Summerfest, which draws huge crowds and concludes with the Town’s fireworks extravaganza (sponsored by the Stafford Savings Bank.) Heritage Park provides a perfectly quaint, New England setting for the Town’s Pumpkin Carving Contest each October. The commission also sponsors Winterfest on Main Street in December, a Snow Sculpture Contest, a Table-Top Christmas Tree Contest and an Easter Egg Hunt.
In addition to the annual family activities these events provide, many folks also look forward to decorating their houses for the Commission’s two holiday contests—the Halloween & Harvest-theme contest and the Christmas decorating contest.
Many of the Town’s holiday decorations, such as the snowflakes that adorn the telephone poles on Main Street each winter, are there thanks to the Commission.
Currently, there are seven members on the Community and Civic Affairs Commission - Chairman Cindy Kabel, Secretary Barbara Bresnahan, Jeff Giglio, John Kabel, April Waugh, Corina Estell, Malisa Buchanan and Bosco Fowler. A potential member must be approved by the First Selectman before being officially granted the volunteer position. Nine individuals are allowed to serve at one time.
The Community and Civic Affairs Commission meets the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the probate room at Warren Memorial Town Hall. Anyone interested in joining should get in touch with Cindy Kabel at 860-604-1509 or Barbara Bresnahan via email at BarbBres@Live.com
