I have been a resident of Yorktown for almost 6 years, and I have 2 young children. Recently I have begun to attend the school board meetings, since there was a topic of interest for me, Full Day Kindergarten. We are 1 of only 2 districts in Westchester County who do not have full day Kindergarten. The board voted in favor of it last night! This is a huge victory. Unfortunately there were some residents in attendance, seniors and US Veterans, who are upset over a new tax exemption that Yorktown has not yet voted on, or discussed due to the way the state rolled it out. I feel that many residents who are angered by this will hold FDK hostage to this Veteran’s Tax Exemption. I am no expert, I am just a citizen and a mother, but I hope that one thing does not get linked to another. There are many issues rolled up into this tax exemption, one being that the 92% of the Yorktown population who are not Veterans will foot the bill for this, with a yearly tax increase.
